Why report directly to the council first
When you report an issue directly to the council, your voice is heard directly and it counts as an individual resident report. This matters: councils prioritise issues reported by many residents over single reports from representatives.
Most council services (including bins, fly-tipping, highways and trees) have dedicated online reporting tools, so it is usually quickest to start there.
When you report, you'll get a reference number. Keep this safe, since if your issue isn't resolved, your councillors can use it to escalate quickly with more weight behind your complaint.
When to contact a councillor
- Your issue isn't resolved after following up
- Multiple residents are affected (helping build a bigger case)
- You need support navigating the process
- The council's response seems unfair or hasn't worked
Checklist when contacting ECA or councillors
- Exact location (full street address or clear landmark)
- Date and time (first noticed, last seen, and if recurring)
- Description of the issue (clear, factual summary and impact)
- Photographs where safe to do so
- Council reference number (if already reported online)
Emergencies
In an emergency, contact the relevant emergency service first. You can still let councillors know afterwards as a secondary update.
- Crime or fire in progress → Call 999
- Gas emergency → 0800 111 999
- Power cut → 105
- Flooding (river or stream) → 0800 807 060
If you're unsure, report it anyway, more information is better than less.
